After a free morning in Merida you’ll be taken to Izamal, ‘the yellow city’. Shop for local handicrafts and enjoy a candle lit dinner after a visit to its Franciscan convent, built atop the ruins of a Mayan pyramid. After a guided tour through the parks Mayan ruins, you’ll continue on to the popular coastal town of Playa Del Carmen. The Yucatan’s rich Mayan history and beautiful tropical lagoon ecology make for an entertaining and educating day out. Visit the Butterfly pavilion, tropical reef aquarium and snorkel in underground rivers, a warm lagoon or even with dolphins (dolphin encounters pre-booked separately). Overnight in Playa Del Carmen Transfer from Playa Del Carmen to Corozal, just across the Belizean border. From Corozal you will fly to San Pedro on Ambegris Caye to enjoy a free afternoon and evening. Overnight in San Pedro Swim with nurse sharks and sting rays. The sharks here, growing to six feet long and the rays, with wing-spans of up to four feet, come close enough to be touched. They are not trained or enclosed but they will eat from your hand, if you can hold your nerve. Established almost 20 years ago the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to a huge variety of exotic fish and coral. And some top class snorkeling! Free afternoon and overnight in San Pedro. A visit to Swallow Caye affords a once in a lifetime look at how the endangered manatee live in their natural habitat. After a short flight from San Pedro to Belize City, you'll transfer to the Belize Jungle Dome, visiting the Belize Zoo on the way. More a wildlife sanctuary than a traditional zoo, this is an awesome display of Belize's colourful and diverse wildlife. By far the cutest zoo we've ever seen! The guided tour guarantees close encounters with the wildlife. After lunch, discover the Belizean jungle on horseback. Overnight at the Belize Jungle Dome. After seeing the best of the Mexican Mayan ruins, its time to visit Guatemala on our Tikal daytrip. Once the capital of a vast Mayan empire (ca 700 AD), tikal is vast at 576 sq km. Despite its place as Guatemala’s premier tourist attraction, Tikal remains much less developed than most of the Mexican Mayan ruins. All around the temples the surrounding jungle teams with monkeys and more besides.
